Catastrophes in Florida
South Florida impacted by storms that damaged vehicles and homes
12/19/09 12:53 PM
A chain of thunderstorms barreled across South Florida late Thursday and into Friday, pounding the coastal areas. Some areas of Southeast Broward and North Miami-Dade recorded more than a foot of rain, which caused flooding that closed secondary roads and stranded cars and motorists. The cities hardest hit were Hollywood, Hallandale Beach and Dania Beach, where emergency crews worked around the clock to pump out and clear streets of abandoned cars. In addition winds damaged structures, as well as roofing and siding materials, across the state. Most of the claims reported thus far are automobile claims and are concentrated in Broward and Dade Counties. As a result of this storm system, Allstate Insurance Company declared a catastrophe in the state of Florida in Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Martin Counties only.
